Large format tiles are tiles with at least one edge greater than 15 inches. They are popular for their aesthetic appeal and easy maintenance, but they also require special attention and care during installation. Here are some steps to follow when installing large format porcelain tiles on a bed of mortar mix:
1. Prepare the substrate. Make sure it is clean, smooth, level and free of any cracks or defects. If needed, use a crack isolation or uncoupling membrane to improve the performance of the porcelain tile installation.
2. Choose the right mortar. Use a polymer modified medium-bed mortar that is specifically formulated for large format tiles. This type of mortar will prevent shrinkage, lippage and cracking of the tiles. It will also provide better support and coverage for the porcelain tiles.
3. Apply the mortar. Use a notched trowel to spread a thin layer of mortar on the substrate, following the manufacturer's instructions. Do not cover more area than you can tile in 15 minutes.
4. Back butter the porcelain tiles. Apply a thin layer of mortar on the back of each porcelain tile using the flat side of the trowel. This will ensure proper bonding and coverage for the porcelain tiles.
5. Set the porcelain tiles. Place the porcelain tiles on the mortar bed, using a slight twisting motion to embed them, use the thumping suction cup to vibrate your porcelain tile level. Do not slide or drag them into place. Use tile spacers to maintain consistent grout joints. The minimum grout joint width should be three times the variation in the facial dimension of the tile and never less than 1/16 inch.
6. Level the tiles. Use self leveling clips to align and level the tiles. Insert the clips under the tiles along the edges, leaving enough space for the grout joints. Then insert the wedges into the clips and tighten them until the tiles are flush and even.
7. Vibrate the porcelain tiles. Use a vibrating Montolit thumping suction cup to compact and consolidate the mortar under the tiles. This will improve the adhesion and coverage of the mortar and eliminate any air pockets or voids that could cause problems later on.
8. Remove the clips and wedges. After letting the mortar cure for at least 24 hours, remove the clips and wedges by kicking them sideways or using a rubber mallet. Do not pull them upwards as this could damage the porcelain tiles or grout joints.
9. Grout the joints. Choose a grout that is suitable for large format tiles and follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing and applying it. Use a rubber float to fill the joints with grout, making sure to remove any excess grout from the surface of the tiles. our tile contractor used Ultra Color grout from Mapei.
10. Clean and seal the porcelain tiles. After letting the grout cure for at least 72 hours, clean the porcelain tiles with a damp sponge or cloth and a neutral cleaner. Then apply a sealer to protect them from stains and moisture.
